Just as 2020 draws to a close, London guru Greentea Peng manages to squeeze out her 5th single of the year, 'Spells'. With their glistening, gemstone quality, Greentea's songs never fail to dazzle, and the new single is no exception. The video and song for 'Spells' straddle gritty London fumes and mother nature's nurturing hand; and it's this relatable inner-city mindset that vividly runs through Peng's work, like in a stick of Brighton rock. The production is cosy like a small flat in a built up area, filled with some smoke from the burning of medicinal green herbs. Heavy beats and somber piano create a murky atmosphere, and Greentea sings with a soulful flow, 'all this jealous words and hexing can not vex me, do not test me', 'words of negativity fucking our realities'. Greentea explains, 'Written around SENSI times, I guess this one explores the idea of tribalism and the want / illusion or desire to please everyone, thus gain acceptance.
